We believe the NSR is the biggest freestyle kayaking event in the world, the biggest student kayaking event in the UK and the best paddling party anywhere!

DATE

27th – 29th March 2009

VENUE

National Watersports Centre, Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham.

REGISTRATION

Registration for the event is all done online.

Go to this link for ‘step by step’ instructions for the online registration process.

A ‘sign up’ form to help you collect the relevant info from your club can be found here.

The deadline for entries is February 11th so please get back to us ASAP.

Registration is not finalised until we recieve the cheque to pay for the entries.

Bib deposit cheques are required to be sent at the same time as the entry cheques (but keep the cheques seperate please). The bib deposit cheques will be returned/destroyed on receipt of all the bibs given to your university.

GENERAL SCHEDULE

The schedule will be similar to last year, but you’ll find an accurate one in the event programme available on the day.

On both days there will be a variety of coaching clinics provided by Tom Parker Coaching as well as a fleet of demo boats from Pyranha and Dagger. DJ Dave the man on the hill is bringing his mobile sound system along for the whole weekend this year and will be broadcasting throughout the weekend.

To top it all off we’ll be building a trade village where you can browse the latest offerings from Desperate Measures, or just sit down with a cup of tea, hang out and watch the competition.

COST

£32 – Competitor Entry to one event, goodie bag, camping on both nights, party on both nights and meal on Saturday night. +£3 for an additional event (i.e. C1, Squirt)

£29 – Spectator NSR is all about the party, feel free to come along to just get drunk and laugh at your friends. This covers goodie bag, camping on both nights, parties on both nights and meal on saturday.

CATEGORIES

The following events will he held over the course of the weekend: K1, C1, Topo Duo*, Squirt and an Invitational King of the Wave (one male and one female paddler from each University will be invited to this event). Due to time constraints this year we won’t be running an open event but bring your old boys along; there may be an old boy banter related prize!

*This year the Topo Duo event - which many think is the highlight of the NSR is FREE. We are limiting the event to 2 teams per university, but remember that a good costume can be as effective as a good crew in getting to the final…

ELIGIBILITY

You must be a student of a higher education institution in order to enter all the events. We will be checking student numbers and illegal entrants will be disqualified without refund. All entrants hold a BCU 3 Star or be of 3 star standard.

JUDGING

The K1 and C1 events for both men and women start off with an 'Extreme Slalom'. Each competitor will run down the course and score points on how they complete the challenges that face them. Subsequently they will be split into categories reflecting their ability (Novice/ Intermediate/Expert). Freestyle heats will then be held on elected features of the course and judges will score paddlers on the moves they pull. All finals will be run as expression sessions. Basically people do what they can do and our select panel of experienced judges will decide who gets through. It is not about just reeling off lots of cartwheels etc. Innovation, imagination and balls will all be rewarded. Competitors will be briefed by the judges prior to the finals.

PLEASE NOTE:  As always our main kit prizes will go to the winners of the intermediate and novice categories, as these are the people that typically don’t have the stuff and deserve it most. However it has been noted that on occasion people will try to ‘avoid’ the expert category by paddling badly in the extreme slalom in order to get put into low categories in attempt to win big prizes. Anyone felt to be ‘cheating’ in this unsportsmanlike way will be disqualified. Full stop.

GOODIES

As always there will be a large selection of prizes up for grabs from all your favourite kayaking companies and many have also contributed to the goody bags that will be given out to all attending. These companies include  Desperate Measures, Palm, Dagger, Pyranha, CKUK, Tom Parker Coaching, Nookie, Means of Production and many more. For up to date info on prizes available, see the sponsors page on our website.

SAFETY

We will have a safety team on stand by at all times. HOWEVER, if you think someone from your club is likely to swim it is your responsibility to cover them by providing a safety boater ready to collect the person and the pieces.

We will also provide first aid cover at the party, but the first aid team will not deal with people who have had too much to drink, they will be the responsibility of their club captain. For genuine first aid needs at the party there will be a sign posted and manned first aid point in the rugby club building, either go there or talk to security if you need help. Please don't call an ambulance until our first aid team has seen them.

CAMPING

Camping will again be located at the Holme Pierrepont campsite (5 minutes walk from the course on the right just as you approach the turning for HPP).

PARTY

River Legacy will once again be bringing the now legendary party tent. Saturday night will be the big one and space-themed costumes are compulsory. The party will be held at the rugby club on the left just as you come in to HPP, quite conveniently 2 minutes walk (or 4 minutes crawl!) from the campsite.

MERCHANDISE

NSR 2009 T-shirts and Hoodies in blue are available to purchase at registration. Get in touch with your club captain if you want one. Hoodies are £18 and T-shirts are £9. On the t-shirts everything will be printed, but on the hoodies the logo on the front will be embroidered.

WHAT NOW?

Get on the website and register your university as soon as possible to be guaranteed a place. Keep checking the site, as changes to the schedule, prizes and promotional videos will all be posted there.

We’re very much of the opinion that practicing is cheating, but Leeds could do with some competition this year. So get training and let the banter commence!

WHEN YOU ARRIVE

When you arrive on the friday evening, event registration will be at the campsite entrance. The club captain will be able to come to us and collect everyones goodie bags and entry bibs and wristbands which should be neatly gathered together in a box.

To get the wristband sealed everyone will need to take their wristband along with a copy of this form (signed) and some valid identification along to the registration area (Acceptable forms of ID are photographic driving licence, passport or proof of age card bearing the PASS logo. Not accepted: University ID cards/NUS cards).

Entry to the campsite once registration is closed and entry to the marquee/party complex will require a sealed wristband.
